WAWU doesn’t accept the idea of a campus bubble – as a union, we’re incredibly active in our surrounding community, and we make up 2% of the voting block in Bellingham! WAWU student employees played a significant role in raising the minimum wage for ALL workers here in Bellingham, and we successfully convinced Whatcom County to continue funding the shelter for unhoused youth this summer! We are also currently fighting with other community organizers for renters’ protections and fair scheduling here in Whatcom County.

Students are famous for voting in lower numbers, and we can make a huge impact in our community if we all actively participate in local politics to fight for ourselves AND for all our neighbors and marginalized communities — an injury to one is an injury to all!
